Eighteen

Letting them into the lodge’s small guest room, Athena shook her head when she saw the layout. Inside, two beds dominated the room, leaving very little space for anything other than a short chest of drawers nestled beneath the large window and a wooden chair tucked away in the corner. Although the beds were not quite touching, they might as well have been. Only a small nightstand and a single lamp were sandwiched between them, forming a thin divide in the otherwise cramped space.

“Cozy,” Kate said, the playfulness from earlier still in her voice.

At least she is taking this well, Athena thought. She could be making me feel really incompetent for not checking out all of the details ahead of time. When Elizabeth said she would make arrangements for Athena and her crew, Athena made assumptions there would be space for all of them. Well, there is space, I suppose. Awkward as it may be. Yet, Kate wasn’t making it awkward. Instead, she stepped past Athena and plopped her overnight bag on one of the beds.

“Window or door?” Kate asked, and Athena frowned, not understanding.

“What do you mean?”

With a smile, Kate motioned toward the window. “Which do you prefer? Sleeping near the window or nearer the door.” She gave Athena a mischievous grin. “I’m assuming we aren’t sleeping together.”

“Oh,” Athena said, suddenly flustered. “No, of course not.” She set her bag on the bed closest to the door. “This one is fine.”

Kate chuckled, the corners of her mouth curled up, revealing her playful nature. However, she refrained from voicing any further thoughts as she moved toward the window, pulling the curtain aside. While the woman surveyed the landscape, Athena worked to pull herself together. Every once in a while, Kate could knock her off her stride. Hinting about sleeping arrangements was nothing but a bit of fun, yet it unsettled Athena more than she liked, and she wasn’t sure if it affected her in a good or bad way. She looked at the two beds in the room again and considered how close together they were situated. It will almost feel like we are in the same bed in here, she thought. Still, sharing the room with Kate made the most sense. Aside from seeing in her niece’s eyes how much she wanted to spend time alone with Max, Athena couldn’t very well stick Kate in a room with Max. Aside from being a complete stranger, the two did not seem to see eye to eye on things. Particularly about me.

“You should come look at these swirling gray clouds,” Kate said without turning from the window. “I’ll be honest, they are more than a little daunting.”

Filled with curiosity, Athena moved across the room to stand by the woman. Kate stepped aside a little to make room, and their shoulders brushed. The unexpected touch made both women jerk away from the contact as if they had been shocked. In that instant, their eyes locked for a beat. The air crackled with unspoken tension while a subtle smile slowly materialized on Kate’s face.
